Winter Coats

It’s cold now.
So the winter coats come out.
Dark and warm and over-sized
Yet the tantalizing breezes
Prick us somehow.
Though the winter coats come out.

It’s cold now.
So the winter coats are worn.
Baggy and enveloping,
Hands hide in pockets comf’tably
Though relics therein make me morn.
When the winter coats are worn.

Last year’s winter coats bid me remember
How mournful was November.
And how I stood up in this coat and cried,
But tears can’t fill the vacancy
That death leaves us inside.
You just can’t keep all the cold out
When it keeps on creeping in.
Death leaves no by-standers,
And it aches like sin.

It’s cold now.
So the winter coats go on.
And we can’t live without them,
Cause what else will keep us warm?
The memories are like wool –
They irritate our skin.
But there’s nothing like wool
to keep the cold from crashing in.

It’s cold now.
So the winter coats, they shout.
And you can’t hush the words they say
And you can’t drown them out,
By any means of peppermint,
By any dose of drugs.
A day will come when the coats go back,
That has to be enough.

Last year’s winter coats bid me remember
How mournful was November.
And how I stood up in this coat and cried,
But tears can’t fill the vacancy
That death leaves us inside.
You just can’t keep the cold out
When it keeps on creeping in.
Death leaves no by-standers,
And it aches like sin.
